GEAR UP at the CSW 2009

[New York, March 2009] This year's Commission on the Status of Women in New York provided an opportunity for advocates for GEAR from different countries to come together. CWGL and WEDO as co-facilitators of the global GEAR Campaign hosted two strategy meetings where members of the European GEAR working group actively participated.

During the CSW, the Secretary General convened the important and long awaited meeting where he introduced a new paper outlining options for the structure and governance of a new women's entity, and where he endorsed the "Composite" option. Also, in the final Agreed Conclusions of the CSW, the gender architecture reform advocates were pleased to note two paragraphs that support the process moving forward and the need to coordinate to address under resourcing for gender equality in the UN system.
