FEMNET writes to African Foreign Ministers
[Nairobi, 18 February 2010] FEMNET, the African focal point of the GEAR Campaign, wrote a letter to African ministers of Foreign Affairs, sending them African women's analysis of the UN Secretary General's proposal for the new UN gender equality entity.
FEMNET urges African governments to speak up in the upcoming negotiations and support that the entity should have universal capacity and its own programming capacity to deliver gender equality agenda at country level. FEMNET also urges governments to support ambitious funding, accelerated appointment of the Under Secretary General to lead the entity, and establishment of formal mechanisms of civil society participation from the regional to national level.
