Take action now! The United Nations General Assembly adopted on 14 September 2009 an important resolution that gives the go-ahead for the creation of a new UN women's rights agency. Now in spring 2010, governments are negotiating about the details of setting up this agency. We must act now to ensure that the new entity will be created and made operational without delay, and that it can really make a difference to women’s lives around the world!
Join the GEAR Campaign and show your support for a new UN Women's Agency:
- Sign the petition to the President of the UN General Assembly on Amnesty International website.
- Send the following letter to the Foreign Minister and the UN mission of your country.

Your Excellency,
Re: Support a swift creation of the new United Nations gender equality entity I am writing to you to thank you for your support for the UN General Assembly’s decision that will enable the creation of the new UN women’s rights agency.
This is a historic moment, which has the potential to start a new era for women’s rights globally. To realize this potential, the resolution adopted on 14th September must be followed by swift and effective action from the UN Secretary-General and the UN member states so that the new entity could be officially created and made operational without delay.
I will therefore join the GEAR Campaign, a global coalition of over 310 civil society organization, and call on you and your government:
- To make a concrete funding commitment for the new entity. Only ambitious, stable and long-term funding will ensure it can make a difference on women’s lives worldwide, and the entity must have an initial starting budget of 1 billion USD.
- To address in timely fashion all outstanding issues required for the entity to begin operations, including the form of its Executive Board.
- To assist the UN Secretary-General with the transparent and swift recruitment of a strong leader to head the new gender equality entity.
I hope I can count on your support and positive action on this now!
Sincerely yours,
